File A Income Tax Extension in 3 Easy Steps
It is really quite easy to extend your IRS income tax deadline to October 15 for individuals & families, and September 15 for businesses.
Step 1: Select an online efile software provider for filing your extension electronically, This will insure your return gets filed properly with the IRS. Once you submit your tax extension application, it's sent directly to the IRS for approval. The transmission to the IRS is secure, and your data is protected at all times.
Step 2: Provide the personal data form 4868 or business data form 7004 the IRS requires for you to file a tax extension. This will include your personal or business information including name, address, social security number and (Tax-ID or EIN for business).
Step 3: Use our Income Tax Calculator to determine if you are going to owe a tax balance and file your extension with payment for any taxes owed. If you expect to owe, you will want to make a tax payment to avoid any potential IRS late payment penalties and interest charges. Your payment can be sent by check or electronic funds transfer from your bank account (EFT).
That's it... You're done! Within a few days you'll receive an email notifying you of extension approval. If your extension is rejected, the email will explain any errors so you can make corrections and resubmit for free.
Other Extension Filing Options
You can also file your extension by using your choice of tax preparation software. Get instructions for how to file an extension using TurboTax, and H&R Block At Home software packages.
You can no longer file an extension by using the IRS TeleFile system that was available in the past. TeleFile was a telephone-based service for extension filing and other tax-related forms.
One Extension Fits All
You no longer need to request a 2nd extension for additional time. The old IRS Form 2688 was used to request an additional 2-month extension when the original first extension only provided a 4-month extension of time. Now Form 4868 provides an automatic 6-month extension, eliminating the need to submit Form 2688 for additional time.
